PRESS RELEASE: Weird Fishes
 8/3/2009  by  Jennifer de Guzman
Surreal Coming-of-Age Webcomic Weird Fishes comes to SLG Publishing

Weird Fishes
, an online comic series created by Jamaica Dyer, will see print as a graphic novel from SLG Publishing this fall. A surreal and odd coming of age tale, Weird Fishes tells the story of Bunny Boy and Dee, two kids who're hitting an age where you can't quite get away with being insane and quirky the way you can when you're little. Dee plays with imaginary talking animal friends and has no intention of stopping, but Bunny Boy hits that wall of realizing he wants to be cool and can't hang out with losers.

"The story was meant to entertain myself and my friends, and I think it's safe to say indie kids are a good part of the audience," creator Jamaica Dyer said about her graphic novel. "It should be relatable to anyone who's dealt with growing up and losing friends and having an overactive imagination."

Dyer began Weird Fishes to show that she could do comics as fine art, putting color pages online without too much concern for what might happen should the material ever see print. After one of the pages was included in a Society of Illustrators student art show, Dyer collected the first 30 pages together as a black and white mini-comic. "I quickly realized that it feels very cohesive as a black and white book," added Dyer. "Obviously it's a shame to not be able to print it in color, but I like the idea of the graphic novel being its own entity. It's the pocket version that you can read on the bus or give to your friends."

Dyer's unique vision and style were best summed up by writer Warren Ellis who said, "The only explanation for Jamaica Dyer is that she was built by aliens and dropped here to show us all how crap we are compared to her." SLG President Dan Vado called Dyer "one of the few people who I have seen successfully marry comics with a fine art sensibility."

The print version of Weird Fishes will be a 120-page black and white graphic novel priced at $9.95, ISBN 978-1-59362-177-3. Scheduled to be released in October 2009, Weird Fishes will be available at better comic book stores and online on Amazon.com as well as SLG Publishing's own website at www.slgcomic.com. A preview and trailer for the book can also be seen on the company's website in the Previews and Coming Attractions section
