Las Vegas, 1959. WWII veteran, Joe Halliday is enjoying the good life. Running Tiki Joe’s Restaurant, courting a beautiful girl and making time with steadfast friends. It’s all good until the local mob moves in with demands for protection money. When the police are unable to help, Joe calls in a few old army friends. Together they decide to pay the mob off....in lead!
Tiki Joe is a graphic novel set in Las Vegas, using Polynesian pop-culture and Las Vegas kitsch as a background. Part murder mystery, part hard-boiled thriller by newcomer Mark Murphy.
"There’s two-fisted action, adventure, double-crossing, and
the requisite sexual tension. Murphy doesn’t bother with digging too
deep into the actual culture of 1950s Vegas, but that’s okay. This book
is more to have some fun with guys wearing tiki masks thwarting crime.
There’s nothing wrong with that." Greg Burgas, Comics Should Be Good
"It’s an
impressive work, not just because of Murphy’s ability to resurrect a
style, a culture, and a time (or as it is represented in the
entertainment of the era), but because he also makes it
enthusiastically enjoyable."
Craig Kent, Rack Raids
"Murphy also knows how to draw a tiki lounge you’d want to hang out in
and the sheer style of his art makes you wistful for swankier times." "...a classy start to an exciting new series." Michael May, Newsarama
