Saturday-Morning Cute with a Twist
Widgey Q. Butterfluff from SLG in January

Widgey Q. Butterfluff is the most sickeningly cute person in the Snugglepump Valley, a place that has been stuck on Saturday Morning for over 20 years. With little more than a sunny personality, a hearty appetite, and a figure-flattering sundress, the eponymous heroine of SLG Publishing's new graphic novel, Widgey Q. Butterfluff by Steph Cherrywell, due out in January 2010,  takes on the full range of kiddy-cartoon villains, from teenaged ennui to armored skeletons to timeslot-appropriate drug metaphors.

Widgey lives in a world straight out of a 1980s Saturday-morning cartoon, complete with her mischievous troublemaking friend Buster, the wacky Professor Schoolbug, and the dastardly villain Lord Meanskull. But somehow her adventures are a little... skewed -- fraught with  motivation-free nefarious plots, accidental drug use, and baffling sexual tension, all depicted with cute, cartoony artwork.

"Widgey was a kid in the eighties and had a lot of the usual stock adventures, but instead of fading out and then reappearing in the 2000's as a direct-to-DVD computer-animated movie, she just aged normally," explained Cherrywell. "So now she's in her thirties and still living the same lifestyle, living on cake and drooling over frilly party dresses. I think it'll be enjoyable to anyone likes who likes cute things, cartoons, or things making fun of cute things and cartoons."

Widgey Q. Butterfluff is a 136-page black-and-white graphic novel made up of short vignettes. It can be pre-ordered from comic book stores now with the Diamond code NOV090583. Its ISBN is 978-1-59362-184-1. A preview is available at SLG Publishing's website, www.slgcomic.com.

Established in 1986, SLG Publishing is a San Jose, California-based publisher of comic books, graphic novels and related merchandise. Some of SLG's more notable comics and creators have included Johnny the Homicidal Maniac by Jhonen Vasquez, Milk and Cheese by Evan Dorkin and Zombies Calling by Faith Erin Hicks.
